Digging For Victory
Two intrepid MaccBUG members, with spade in hand, headed for A538 Altincham Road near the airport tunnels to demonstrate the lack of maintenance on the cycle/walking path.
The enroachment of soil and vegetation has been reported a number of times over the past 2 years or more but to no avail. The 3m path has been reduced in width to 2m or less due to the lack of clearing or sweeping. The path should be maintained by Macclesfield Borough Council.
The photo above demonstrates just how much path needs unearthing. We await developments!

Cheshire East Cycling Campaign
As you are probably already aware, on 01.04/09 Cheshire East local authority will replace Cheshire County Council and the Borough Councils (Macclesfield, Congleton, Crewe and Nantwich).
On 1st September representatives from cycling groups across the area met in Congleton to discuss a way forward.
In was agreed, in principal and subject to agreement of the members of each group, to form a (new) county-wide cycle campaign umbrella group to be called Cheshire East Cycling Campaign.
Within this the various local groups would continue to function but with a reasonable degree of co-ordination.
A further meeting is scheduled for 8th October to agree more detail but if you have any thoughts/suggestion in the meantime please get in touch.
It is important that we have things structured quite quickly so that we can have an influence on how cycling (training, cycle forum, schemes etc) is treated in the new regime.

Weird Cycle Facility: Number 2
Mixed messages on a cycle route near to Manchester Airport.
Cyclists have been rumoured to have been spotted dismounting, mounting and remounting at this sign which encourages cyclists to use the shared facility whilst dismounting.

Cycling is the smarter choice…
From the CTC:
The Department for Transport has published its response to both the Stern
Review (on climate change) and the Eddington Study on Transport. This
document sets out the strategic direction of the Department for the next 7
years and, encouragingly, will in part focus specifically on the 56% of car
journeys under 5 miles - easily shifted to cycle trips - as a way of
reducing carbon emissions. Another innovation is the inclusion of health in
the Department's goals. This too could herald a more central role for
cycling in the Government policy and funding priorities. However, with the
culture of devolution currently sweeping through government it remains to
be seen whether these tentative steps towards healthier and more
sustainable transport will bear fruit at a local level.
